MAJOR IN PHILOSOPHY

I major in philosophy and attend the University of Illinois at Chicago, which is one of the best philosophy schools in the country.  My concentration is ancient philosophy, specifically that of Aristotle, Plato, and Socrates, though I also like Xeno.  Back then, philosophy was science and they turned to these great men and their teachings to explain the universe.  So what am I doing writing a paper on data backup video?  Sure, I had to take computer science as an elective, but I registered in an entry level course.  The class is so far from advanced that we use Windows 95 as the operating system on all the computers in the classroom.  I know I need this class to graduate in a few years, but I still feel like I’m wasting my time.  It’s hard to imagine it, but tape backup used to be the best way to save data unless you wanted to use dozens and dozens of floppy disks to save the same amount.  The tapes were flaky and slow, but they saved up a lot.  Nowadays, you can get a whole bunch of CD’s for cheap and save just as much on CD as a tape, I think.  Why do I have to bother learning about this if it’s already become an obsolete technology?  And, yes, I am aware of the irony that I’m interested in ancient philosophy, and thus ancient science, and not information technology from around 20 years ago or so.
